Jacquie Gulliver Thompsons’s interests centred from 1996 to 2007 on the invigorating energies created in taut compositions by vibrant hues and forceful movements. Increasingly, this led her to engage with the rich legacy of the Baroque, sometimes in terms of style, sometimes in terms of theme.
This engagement might involve reworking the gestures of passion and despair in the grand Baroque narratives of archetypal dramas. Or it might seek to recapture the celebration of life and harmony sought in pastorals, dance and the rapture of the Three Graces – a dream that would re-emerge in her images of modern bathers.
In 2001, a visit to Mexico allowed her to explore the startling encounter there (and sometimes fusion) between native formal traditions with a cultural focus on suffering and kindred features of Spanish Baroque.
Profile
Jacquie Gulliver Thompson studied Fine Art in the sixties at St Alban’s School of Fine Art under Euan Uglow and George Fullard. Not wanting to teach, she then trained as a graphic designer for book publishing, later art-directing a wide variety of illustrated books (one of them prize-winning) for publishers such as Mitchell Beazley and Dorling Kindersley. Throughout, she continued life drawing and gradually returned to her original interest, painting, which she was finally able to pursue professionally in her studio at the
Limehouse Art Foundation.
She has works in collections in France, Italy, the Antilles, Canada, Massachusetts, California and the UK.
